Change sucks (except when it doesn’t)
When I was about six years old, my mother told me we were going to move to the other side of the country. I had to say goodbye to my friends and go to a new school where I didn’t know anybody. It sucked. Except the part where I quickly made new friends and I soon forgot about our previous house.
Two years ago, all of a sudden I had to work from home. No more socializing with colleagues at the coffeemachine. It sucked. Except the part where I could get out of bed later, bring my daughter to school and still start the day earlier than before. Or the part where there were less distractions when I wanted to get work done. Or the part where I could make fried rice for lunch and watch Netflix while eating it.
Recently my supermarket closed for a whole week to remodel their interior, and I had to drive further to another supermarket to buy my groceries. And worse, when it reopened, everything was in a different place! It sucked. Except the part where the new interior turned out to be much easier to navigate, and overall the store had gotten a nicer, more open atmosphere.
Things will always change. And at first, it will always suck. Sometimes it will suck a lot. Sometimes just a little. But if we focus on the right things, and trust that we can adapt, we might just find that change can come with its benefits, too.
