Spectacular

If you think you should see Top Gun: Maverick because they shot all of the action for real, then that’s only part of the story.

Yes, the shots are breath-taking. Watching the actors actually inside the cockpit of F-18 is totally convincing. The maneuvers the planes make are jaw-dropping.

“Ooooh” “Aaaah” “What??” “Holy shit!” “Whaaa!”

At one point my girlfriend had to shush me because I was making too much noise. But I couldn’t help it. The movie was just so spectacular.

But the real spectacle of Top Gun: Maverick doesn’t lie in just the shots. What really kept me on the edge of my seat was the story. As with all good movies, it’s the narrative that we engage with, not the visuals. The conflict, the characters’ challenges and choices. The anticipation.

It wasn’t Shakespeare, but the script of Top Gun: Maverick was very, very effective. I loved it. Not just as a movie-goer, but also as someone who likes to study the art of making movies. This movie is a masterclass in how to transport an audience to another world for 2,5 hours.

One scene in particular was really memorable and gave me the chills. Not because of what I saw, but because of what one of the characters did. It made me want to jump out of my seat and yell “YEAH!!!” (But for my girlfriend’s sake, I didn’t)

I won’t spoil the story here for you. You will have to go see it for yourself, on the biggest screen possible. Trust me: don’t miss this spectacle.
