The birth of success

After weeks of delay, this weekend I finally met my new nephew, my sister’s newborn baby. And of course it was a delightful moment. How can you not be smitten with a little baby, especially when it’s your sister’s? It made me think: why is the birth of a child such a special moment?

Well first of all, the mother worked her ass off to deliver her child. Women are awesome! And yes, of course babies are super cute. Nature has designed them to be adorable! And yes, it’s an event everyone has been looking forward to for close to a year.

But there is another thing that makes a birth one of the most meaningful things in life: babies are our legacy. They will become what we leave behind. They are our successors. That’s where the word “success” comes from, from the Latin verb succedere: to follow, to succeed. So whatever my little nephew does in his life, by definition he is a success.

Welcome, little one.
