Consistency requires buffers

Lately I’ve been having trouble being consistent.

Putting out a blogpost every day is hard, as I wrote before. Sometimes I’m just too tired. Or I simply don’t know what to write about. I usually catch up. So that, on average, I’m still writing an article every single day of the week. But since a couple of days, I’m running behind.

And I don’t like it.

Because I thought consistency would be simple: I just do the same thing over and over again. But what is not simple, is that circumstances change. My energy level changes. My motivation can be low. Or I simply don’t have time left in a busy day.

Reality is not consistent, it turns out.

That’s when a buffer can help. An online video needs to download a little bit first, before it can be streamed without interruption. Frozen meals can help us get dinner on the table, when we don’t feel like cooking, or don’t have the time.

And an already written text can help me to keep publishing a blogpost every single day, even when I don’t feel like typing.

And so today I’m creating a buffer for my blog. Or when you’re reading this, almost two weeks ago. I felt motivated and words came out of my hands more easily than usual. So I saved this article to catch up, when I don’t feel like writing.

I’m doing my future self a favour. I hope he likes it.
